MERCEDES CABRAL
LEAD ACTRESS

Her role as CELIA brings a lot of dynamic in DA DOG SHOW. After the production of the movie, she realized that the role was a good challenge for her to enlarge her acting skills because normally these acting roles don't exist in the Philippines cinema. She is mostly casted to show her sex appeal.

In the Philippines she is regarded as the „Indy Queen“, because she started already very young to work with directors like Brillante Mendoza and other independent movie directors. The collaboration with him led her to 4 movies with him. His movies brought her to Cannes Film Festival and to Venice Film Festival. With the South Korean director Park Chan-Wook she collaborated in his movie THIRST.

As a reference for the movie DA DOG SHOW the director Ralston Jover used the documentary BEST FRIEND from 2006 and I WITNESS: DOG STAR produced in 2014 of Howie Severino, where the „real“ MANG SERGIO was the main character. Like in the movie, MANG SERGIO lives with his family and his two dogs in slum like circumstances on a cemetery close to a harbour in Manila. He tries to keep his family together with his perception of values and world view.

He earns his money doing dog shows in public places of Manila. He does it with all his passion. But SERGIO his health condition isn't stable and the costs for the medicines always uses up all the money for him and his family.

Since the broadcasting of the documentary, SERGIO has earned a more respect for his situation and gained a bit of popularity. Once he became the centre of a dog food commercial.
